Reel Choice for Surfcasting

Choosing the perfect reel for surfcasting depends very much on the angler himself. For anyone who is already accustomed with a multiplier would anytime say it is better than a spinning reel. I personally think that using a multiplier will allow the angle to be precise in casting his bait. Multiplier reels is also said to be able to allow the angler cast further. Well, I am of the opinion that there is no wrong or right answer. It still very much depends on he angler himself. Often times I have seen anglers using spinning reels and cast heir bait nearer to the shore will also catch gorgeous size rays.

I myself would prefer a spinning reel if I fish at night as I hate it when I mistimed my cast and had a birdnest. Obviously the faintest of light although with the help of headlights, torchlight, it wouldn’t be much of a help as the work to unscramble the birdnest is indeed troublesome. So spinning is my choice when I fish at night.

There are many choice of spinning reels but for a surfcaster, the best will be a long spool spinning reels. This not only helps you to load lots of lines but also helps you cast further as the long spool will let the line goes out smoothly. Unlike the multiplier reel, you don’t have to worry the time the sinker touches the water on every cast.

Using spinning or a multiplier reel, in any way possible try not to leave it lay on the beach as the sand that enter into it will overtime damage the reel. I have seen many surf anglers simply lay it on the beach sand especially when they get too excited after landing a fish.

It is also a good practice to rinse the reel with fresh water after fishing from the beach just to dissolve excess saltwater that may crystallize into some parts of the reels. This practice may help us prolong the life span of the reel.

Last but not least, choose a reel that makes you enjoy fishing. Fishing is a joy and should be trouble free eh…

Salted Bait!

During festive season it is quite difficult to get fresh baits. I have learn to make my own. Quite effective although not as effective as those fresh ones. At least I have some baits with me when in need. This is how prepare the bait.

Some fresh prawns.

A plastic container.

Some coarse sea salt.

1. Put 1 layer of the sea salt in the container.

2. Arrange the prawns on it and cover them with the sea salt.

You can have a few layers if you want it.

When done. Keep it in the freezer.

To use it simply remove the sea salt and hook it to your fishing hook.

If you get lucky, you’ll hook some fish.

Cheers..

Whiting Fishing in Malaysia

I am a whiting fishing enthusiast.  It may not be a big game fishing but the thrill the fish gave when hooked is simply awesome despite its size.

This has always be my favorite fishing on the surf beaches of Malaysia especially on the west coast. Generally this species will come to shore during neap tides and fishing them is blissful while waiting for the biggies to swallow my bait.

I will normally use two rods, one for the big game and the other for this fun whiting. To fish whiting my simple and favorite technique is using the paternoster rig with small hooks of size 11-12. As opposed to the big game rod, the one I used for whiting fishing as normally 10-12 feet rod with fast action. Whiting as I has observed is somewhat clever (they say fish has no brains?). The best style of fishing is to cast about 50 meters out and slowly retrieving it. But when there is a lot of whiting, just cast into the school of whiting and you can just wait. In less than two minutes you will see action at the tip of your rod.  If one is lucky he could hook 50 whiting in only about 1 hour, a feat I have personally achieved in Teluk Rubiah in Lumut. I have also witness the same in the beach near Lumut town. Best bait would be the rag worms.

Whiting is a good eating fish. Some of my Chinese friends will use it to make laksa or sour noodles. If deep fried it is so sweet and crispy if eaten when it just left the frying pan. Yummy!

Anyhow if you are fishing whiting, try your best to spare the little ones and release them as soon as possible so that they could live another day for future whiting fishing bliss.

Cheers..
